Hawaii Aku or SkipJack Tuna is an important fish in Hawaii for food. That's the deep red fish meat you find in famous Poke Bowls and is much preferred over Ahi. Most Aku are line caught, which helps keep this fish in the sustainable category. At the hieght of the Aku season (summer) some fisherman catch Aku upwards of 30 lbs. In Japan the Aku is called Katsuo.
In ancient Hawaii, the priests designated catching the Aku as kapu (forbidden) for six months of the year, opposite of the Opelu fish.
