About Kaku
Kaku is a solitary predator that can often be found motionless in the top layer of the ocean seen while snorkeling in Hawaiian waters. Kaku have sleek, narrow bodies growing sometimes over 5 ft, with an toothy overbite and a large tail for explosive acceleration. If Kaku are spooked by a watercraft or predators, they can accelerate and exit the water like torpedos and stay skipping above the surface by tail propulsion for hundreds of feet.
Hawai'i Kaku Legend
In Hawaii, the three species of Kaku are highly regarded by local fisherman. Traditionally, Hawaiian fisherman would call to the Kaku and its spirit to aid them in netting the ever sustaining ‘Opelu fish. The Kaku were actually essential in forming up the ‘Opelu into an easier to catch fish ball similar to the job of a sheep dog rounding up sheep. After taking in their nets, the fisherman would hand feed a portion back to their Kaku partners, giving thanks. This is why the Kaku is also named the ‘Opelu Mama.
Due to sportfishing, the Kaku is starting to falter. Respectful Hawaiian fisherman know to leave the Kaku in the water as their fishing helper.
